The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at St. Michael’s School supports children from the age of three through to the end of their Reception year. Our Early Years provision includes a Nursery and two Reception classes, where children begin their school journey in a caring, stimulating and supportive environment.
Children usually join our Reception classes at the beginning of the school year in which they turn five, before moving on to Key Stage 1 at the start of Year 1. The Early Years stage plays an important role in helping children develop the skills, confidence and enthusiasm for learning that will support them throughout their time at school.
We recognise that children arrive at school with a wide range of experiences and knowledge. Many will have attended different early years settings within the local community and will already have developed important skills. Our approach builds on what children already know and can do, helping them to continue their learning and development.
Our Early Years provision is based on the following key principles:
Building on children’s existing knowledge and experiences
Ensuring that every child feels included, supported and valued
Providing a broad range of learning opportunities that meet the needs of young children
Offering a balance of activities both indoors and outdoors to support learning through play and exploration
Through these experiences, we aim to create a positive start to school life where children feel happy, confident and ready to learn.
