ASSESSMENT & TESTING
At St Michael’s, we are determined to ensure that all opportunities are available for the children to develop. We make use of accurate assessment for pupils of all ages in order to plan for their next steps in learning. Our learners achieve highly and make excellent progress – among the highest rates of attainment and progress both Locally and Nationally.
We were delighted that in the latest Sunday Times rankings, St Michael’s School was placed 214th out of 16,000 primary schools which includes independent, voluntary and state-funded schools. This puts us within the top 1% of schools nationally.
When are children assessed at St Michael’s?
Alongside continuous teacher assessments, there are national assessments at regular intervals in English primary education:
Children are assessed against Areas of Learning for their EYFS profile in Reception
The Phonics Screening Check takes place in Year 1 (Summer 2 term)
The end-of-Key-Stage test in Year 2 (KS1 SATs) (Summer 1 term)
An online multiplication times-table check in Year 4 (Summer 2 term)
The end-of-Key-Stage test in Year 6 (KS2 SATs) (Summer 1 term)
In year groups where End of Key Stage tests are not applicable (Years 1, 3, 4 and 5), the school uses Standardised tests to assess whether children have met Age Related Expectations or not.

Phonics screening check:
The phonics screening check is taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England and is usually taken in June. It is designed to give teachers, and parents information on how individual children are progressing in phonics. It helps to identify whether a child needs additional support so they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

Key Stage 1 SATs:
End of KS1 national curriculum assessments are now optional for schools from 2024. We have chosen to continue to use the SATs in KS1 to support our ongoing assessment of children's reading comprehension and their Arithmetic and Reasoning skills in Mathematics. There is no requirement for parents to do anything extra at home. Below is further information for parents.
Multiplication Tables Check (MTC):
Children in Year 4 will participate in the multiplication tables check (MTC) in June. The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. More information for parents is below
Key Stage 2 SATs:
KS2 SATs will take place nationally for children in Year 6. Governmental information for parents is below.
