"Working together for the good of all"
St Michael’s is a school and nursery where little people begin a big learning journey! Children who join us in Nursery or Reception discover a place where they truly belong, a safe, nurturing environment that feels like a ‘home away from home’.
Our Early Years provision takes a holistic approach to teaching and learning. We focus on developing children’s social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical skills, supporting every child to grow and flourish. Through carefully planned experiences, we encourage inquisitive young minds to question, wonder, explore and discover the world around them. Our experienced staff create engaging and creative learning opportunities, placing children at the heart of everything we do. Within our safe and caring Christian environment, we aim to inspire curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
At St Michael’s, our curriculum is delivered through enquiry-based learning, where carefully planned questions spark curiosity and create a sense of awe and wonder. This approach encourages children to investigate ideas, explore new concepts and develop their understanding through meaningful experiences.
Our Early Years curriculum follows the EYFS Statutory Framework, which includes seven areas of learning and development that underpin everything we do.
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Understanding the World
Our practice is guided by four key principles:
A Unique Child
We recognise that every child is unique and support them to develop confidence and independence.
Positive Relationships
Children build strong relationships with adults and their peers. We work closely with parents and carers to support every child’s development.
Enabling Environments
Our indoor and outdoor spaces encourage exploration, investigation and independent learning.
Learning and Development
Children make good progress through learning that is playful, practical and builds on their interests and prior knowledge.
In the Early Years at St Michael’s, we support children to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning, helping them become confident and motivated learners:
Playing and Exploring – investigating and trying new experiences
Active Learning – concentrating and persisting when challenges arise
Creating and Thinking Critically – developing ideas, making links and solving problems
Inclusion
At St Michael’s, we are committed to ensuring every child feels valued and included. We recognise that children develop at different rates and bring a wide range of experiences with them. Staff work closely with families and, where appropriate, outside professionals to ensure learning experiences are adapted so that all children are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.
Starting school and moving between year groups are important milestones. We support smooth transitions by working closely with families and previous settings, offering visits and opportunities for children to become familiar with their new environment and teachers. As children prepare for Year 1, we provide opportunities for them to meet new staff and explore their next learning environment so they feel confident and ready for the next stage of their journey. Please see our ‘Starting School’ web page for further information.

In St. Michael’s Early Years we create many opportunities for children to practice their independent skills. This includes attending to personal hygiene and care; following daily routines such as tidying up after snack time and learning activities; selecting and choosing their own resources; and staying safe in their environment. We develop social skills such as turn-taking, sharing resources, following and carrying out instructions, collaborative play, waiting patiently and being kind towards adults and peers.
