Keeping fit and healthy....

Intent

At St Michaels, we are passionate about Physical Education!  We have high expectations for all children and believe that ALL children can participate and succeed irrespective of their academic or physical ability. Children have the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced and developmental programme of activities.

We aim to deliver a high-quality physical education curriculum which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. We provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect as well as supporting the development of a growth mindset.

The curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities; are physically active for sustained periods of time (minimum of 30 active minutes per day in school); engage in competitive sports and activities; and lead healthy, active lives.

Implementation

We believe in giving all pupils, irrespective of their academic or physical ability, the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced and developmental programme of activities including invasion games (netball, basketball, football etc), net and wall games (tennis), striking and fielding games (rounders and cricket), athletics (running, jumping and throwing activities), gymnastics, dance and swimming.  We do so in the belief that physical education in a safe, supportive and challenging environment is a vital component in the development of children’s physical and emotional health and well-being.  This, we believe, includes qualities such as enjoyment, tolerance, co-operation, teamwork and the development of expertise.

In this context, we are committed to achieving maximum participation for all children whilst recognising the need for equal opportunities on the grounds of gender and children’s specific individual needs.  Within a caring and supportive environment, we believe in encouraging positive relationships between groups and individuals while providing challenge and stimulation through physical activity.

We believe in allowing children to apply skills, knowledge and concepts, to experiment, to be creative and imaginative and to recognise and celebrate progression and achievement within the physical medium.

We are further committed to recognising the importance of physical activity of children outside the curriculum.  We believe that links with sporting bodies, clubs etc., and the provision of extracurricular activities organised by the school is a positive experience and that the recognition and celebration of children’s achievements outside school promote an awareness of the value of physical activity for all children.

Fundamentally, we have the understanding that fun, challenging and safe activity will help our children develop the enthusiasm and love for sport/physical activity that will keep them engaged for a lifetime. Subsequently, our children will have the tools to lead healthy and fulfilling lives through their childhood into adulthood.

Our curriculum is enriched with a programme of sport before school, at lunchtime and after school. Our extra-curricular programme adds breadth and depth to our children's learning giving them a wide range of activities to choose over the course of the year. Our booster programme identifies children which need extra support to develop their fundamental skills, coordination and fitness.

Impact

On Friday 4th March 2022 the winners were announced for Active Wandsworth Awards 2021. We are delighted to announce that we were recognised for all the PE and sport that we do and were awarded first place in the Local Authority as an 'Active School'. The evening was hosted by Sky Sports News presenter, Emma Paton.  The standard of nominations across the ten award categories demonstrated the sporting talent in Wandsworth but also the amazing commitment of grass roots organisations , who have shown resilience in supporting the community in the past two years. This is a fantastic achievement for the school. Please click the links below to see all our achievements in PE.

After School Sports Clubs

We are very fortunate that the staff give up their time to run a variety of after sports clubs. Each term an overview of the clubs on offer is sent to parents to select. The breadth and variety of after school sports has increased greatly and the children have the opportunity to sample new sports and develop their sporting skills and talents. Please refer to the Clubs section of the school website to gain a detailed overview of what is on offer, when and the skills we aim to develop. We also offer booster clubs to provide extra support to children that need some extra time to practice their skills. Autumn Clubs 2023

PE & Sports Subject Specialist Leader

At St. Michael’s there is a sports specialist lead teacher allocated to overseeing the development and promotion of sport. The PE/Sports Subject Leader has the responsibility of planning, co-ordinating and developing sports at school. An action plan is drafted annually identifying aspects to be developed for this area and is monitored regularly to ascertain the progress and impact upon the development of sport for the children.

Kick London

As part of our aim to develop PE and sport Louise from Kick London delivers our dance and gymnastics. Louise works with our teachers to develop their subject knowledge and teaching strategies to teach dance and gymnastics. Kick also supports our after school programme to ensure children have a wide variety of sports to access at school. The children have the opportunity to develop sporting skills such as football, rugby, multi-sports to name but a few.

Inter-school / Inter-Borough Competitions

St Michael’s takes part in competitive sports across the borough and annually participates in the Putney Leagues for football and netball. We attend cross country meetings, in which we have had a huge amount of success in recent years. We are members of the Wandsworth School Games and PPSSA which gives us the opportunity to compete against other schools in a range of sports.

Lunchtime Sports Opportunities

The playground has been re-developed as a result of the building expansion programme and we now have designated ‘Zone’ areas for play activities. They are:

In House Sporting Opportunities

Each half term the children are involved in House Day events. These often have a sports focus with children having the chance to represent their house against competitors from other Houses. This fosters a healthy competitive spirit within our school.

Swimming in Year 4

Children in Year 4 have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at Southfields Academy so that they develop into confident, competent and safe swimmers. The lessons are led by ASA qualified swimming instructors.

Sports Week

Each year St. Michael’s organises sports week. This gives every child the chance to participate in sports throughout the week and each year children are introduced to new sports they might not have had the chance to play before.

Our specialist sports coach and teachers do a fantastic job of ensuring that the children take part in a wide range of physical activities and the entire week is dedicated to promoting fitness, healthy eating and all-round well-being.

During Sports Week our annual Sports Days are held and the children have the opportunity to compete as part of a house.

Links with Southfields Academy

St. Michael’s are very fortunate to have close links with Southfields Academy. We use the swimming pool and attend Wandsworth School Games competitions and festivals.
